Turning Wellbeing Data into Real Change:
Glendowie College's Story of Connection

This story was shared by Amelia Mathewson, Glendowie College student and member of the Rangatahi
Ora Group.

Student Voices in Action: A Story of Impact and Change

At Glendowie College, wellbeing is more than a goal—it’s a continuous journey guided by student voices. When the Rangatahi Ora Wellbeing group looked at the school’s Pulse data, they noticed an opportunity to boost students’ sense of connection with teachers and other adults on campus. What started as an observation quickly turned into a school-wide initiative that is now transforming the culture at Glendowie.

Let's see what they did:

Step 1: Looking at the Data

Using Pulse insights, the Rangatahi Ora group discovered that students in Years 9, 10, and 11 felt only moderately connected to adults at school. The group saw this as a chance to make a difference by fostering stronger bonds within the school community.

Step 2: Taking Action

With this goal in mind, the students launched a dedicated "Wellbeing Week" to build connections between students and teachers. Activities like morning teas and interactive games provided natural ways for students and staff to interact and connect. The intentional focus on relationship-building quickly set a positive tone across the school.

Step 3: Measuring the Impact

Just a few months after Wellbeing Week, the impact was clear. The score for "Connectedness to Adults" rose from 6.3 to 7.1 out of 10 - a significant improvement that students and teachers feel every day.

Step 4: Embracing Continuous Improvement

Recognising that wellbeing is an ongoing journey, the Rangatahi Ora group has made it their mission to regularly review Pulse data and implement small, meaningful actions year-round. They understand that nurturing a connected community is about consistency and adaptability.
